We were not meant to fly by Uzlo We were not meant to fly by Uzlo
I think that if you want a person to fly with bird wings, those wings has got to be pretty big, bigger than this. Angels are fascinating, sure, and pretty, but it can't be easy to be one. Imagine putting a shirt on - and walking! Walking hunched?

I don't think there are any good ways to fold wings on a human back and make it comfortable and natural as well as practical and pretty... At least not in real life. *duhrrrr*

I still like drawing wings. Matt has pretty wings. Flamingos are funny. Silly of me to say "Atavian". But wth...

And since everyone ask me, all the time: No, I have not read Maximum ride.

This is why my angels can retract their wings when they take human form, like a cat's claws.

maybe angels dont fully fold their wings like birds do ?
Look at albatrosses having trouble folding them when they land.

I wish I had these wings!
Angels probably have retractable wings for convenience. Or maybe they are smaller but really strong and powerful.

OMG, PINK WINGS! I absolutely love your studies, even though we're not meant to fly wings are cool. I always imagined that winged humans or angels would have the ability to retract their wings and sprout at will, like cat claws.

I know how ya feel, man ._. Ritos from TloZ Wind Waker are my only comfort for they magically transform their arms into wings. That would totally do the thing.
Nice drawings, though))

dude, I get you. I go through all this effort of drawing a completely original character from an anime I'm working on, put it on the internet, and people are just like "oh cool is she a Maximum Ride OC."

asdfh;adsjf;ldashgjadshdfl;ksjsdja i'm going to f*cking murder someone the next time that happens.

But talking about humans with wings, I think bat-like wings would be the most realistic, cause we could scrunch up our wing-fingers to walk. That's a weird sentence right there.

Also we need large pectoral muscles to fly, probably as big as a barrel, but then we would be too heavy :/

Then again, the largest animal that ever flew was quetzalcoatlus, and it was taller than a giraffe and weighed more than 400 pounds...

In reality, all we'd really need were lighter bones and large wings bigger than out bodies to allow us to fly, then we'd be set.

The muscles are still necessary. The pectoral muscles are (on average) 20% of a bird's body weight, but it depends on the bird. Ducks are more muscular than vultures because ducks beat their wings quickly while vultures soar on thermals. Try flapping your arms for an extended period of time, birds fly for hours sometimes and they need to have enough force in that flap to keep them airborne. We have enough musculature in our legs to propell us into the air (jump), but not enough in our arms.

I know one idea I see a lot is that the wings seem to rotate slightly up, kind of like we can lift our arms above our heads, or shift around our shoulder blades, and then they settle, either folded as shown, or more to the sides of the body.  This would at least help with the length issue, but you would have to be a bit more careful when walking through low doors, as the wing 'wrist' protrudes higher above the head.

Hmmm… I think I might see a way to make the wings fold believably, but it might look kinda awkward… I'd really have to think about the anatomy too, I'd almost have to rearrange the shoulder joints...

This has given me something to think about!

hm.

it's pretty.

and about the whole winged human thing.

You see if they were a highbred or mutant I think there body would probably adapt to the wings. the kids in Maximum Ride have more than just a birds wings so that kinda helps them out.

Humans have very dense bones.. If we had large air pockets inside the bones, much like birds, air sacs in addition to lungs, and perhaps a more aerodynamic figure (lots of lean muscle), we may find flight possible. As for angels--- Aren't they a bit different in form from humans anyway? The rules which govern us do not necessarily apply to them. Regardless, beautiful picture! :D

Angels are supernatural beings made by God. Some have more than 2 pairs of wings. So I don't think the same principle applies to angels.

As for the humans are not made to fly, Aye, I totally agree. Unless you tweek the human body. This is just a sci-fi anatomy sheet for a human avian hybrid mutant if the DNA was 2% bird. >>fav.me/d696fl4

Well, angels usually supports some kind of super strength so maybe they would be able to keep their wings in some sort of half folded way so they don't touch the ground at all?

Well, if angels are all they seem, then there should be a way to hide the wings so they wolud not bother and
scientists woludn't hold you to a table and make experiences.

I wonder, why no one stated what angels' pulse must be far greater than human's... to feed muscular tissue of the wing... And, because of that, they would be hot to touch? =D

In a book I read recently I the angels had wings that could only be seen by other brings slimier to them and were made of some type of vapor like subsistence that allowed it to be Waite less to them. And I see how what I said could be flowed but just saying.

Hi, I like this. I still want wings but you bring up valid issues. I see you haven't read maximum ride, I have and enjoyed it but there where a lot of things I had issues with. at least with the second version of it. (He wrote two series with the character max who had wings) the first one was a bit better with the anatomy cause the girl didn't have boobs and had a large chest. She also lied eggs. In the second one though she was pretty much physically normal except for the wings (and then they advanced even further and could breath under water and all this ridiculous stuff. But my biggest issue with the whorl story is that main character is around 6 ft, has a 15ft wing span and somehow manages to hide her wings under a jacket. That just doesn't work >.< any way you picture reminded me of that because of the little guy under the flamingo wings. :D You sketch is so pretty, I want to be able to draw wings TT.TT

"When the wind blows" and "The lake house" (read them in that order). They were sort of a test for James with the idea of flying, experimented on kids.

very beautiful wings. Biologically, if people were to have wings, you would wither be looking at a really tall or really short body build with a seriously buffed out chest to support flight. Plus the wings may not fold conventionally, you may be possibly looking at another joint so they would tuck in and up.... and skinny.. they would definitely be skinny. Or so I would suppose. Your pictures are lovely ^_^

They're great-looking, but in my opinion, wings can either dissapear, contract to a reasonable size, or be mecha-wings. That'd look cool.
